The ASEAN-Germany Cooperation Review took place last week at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta. Both ASEAN and Germany agreed to adopt a stronger programmatic approach in designing and implementing future projects and to establish better linkages between national and regional-level activities within ASEAN. The Review also identified several topics for further discussion
Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Ms. Alicia dela Rosa Bala and Ambassador Dr. Georg Witschel of the Federal Republic of Germany opened the Review, held as a follow-up to the first ASEAN-Germany Strategic Planning Workshop held in March of last year. H.E. Ms. Bala thanked Germany for its continued support towards ASEAN’s community building efforts while H.E. Dr. Witschel highlighted the increasingly important role that ASEAN is playing on the global arena.
Around 60 participants attended the Review; among them representatives from the Permanent Missions of ASEAN Member States, ASEAN sectoral committees and the ASEAN Secretariat on the ASEAN side, as well as representatives from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Germany Embassy in Jakarta, Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and Kreditanstalt fur Wiederaufbau (KfW) on the German side.
ASEAN-Germany cooperation projects currently cover three areas: Environment and Climate Change; Regional Economic Integration; and Institutional Strengthening/Capacity Development. To date, Germany has contributed approximately 70 million euros to ASEAN projects and activities.
