ASEAN Steps Up Fight against Cybercrime and Terrorism

ASEAN Steps Up Fight against Cybercrime and Terrorism
SINGAPORE, 30 May 2014 - Recognising the threat of cybercrime in the region and demonstrating ASEAN’s continued commitment in addressing this emerging non-traditional security threat, two new mechanisms in handling cybercrime have been established under the ambit of the ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Transnational Crime (SOMTC).
The first SOMTC Working Group on Cybercrime, which was held on 27 May in Singapore, finalised an ASEAN roadmap on combating cybercrime. The Roadmap aims for enhanced regional cooperation on capacity building and training, law enforcement, regulation and legal matters, information exchange, and extra-regional cooperation.
The Meeting was followed by the Inaugural ASEAN-Japan Cybercrime (AJCC) Dialogue on the next day. This Dialogue is a follow-up to the commitment made at the ASEAN-Japan Commemorative Summit in December 2013. During the Dialogue, ASEAN Member States and Japan discussed the enhancement of practical and strategic cooperation in fighting cybercrime. The Terms of Reference of the Dialogue was also finalised by the Meeting.
The series of Meetings then culminated in the ASEAN-Japan Counter-Terrorism (AJCT) Dialogue, convened for the 9th round from 29 to 30 May in Singapore. The 9th AJCT Dialogue reviewed the progress of ASEAN-Japan cooperation on counter-terrorism, including the status of projects and activities under the current Phase. The projects covered areas relevant to counter-terrorism on transport security, including aviation security; border control and Immigration, including inland water management; law enforcement; maritime security; capacity building; cyber-terrorism; and chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosives (CBRNE).
